so we don't miss anything. for what it's worth, president obama and house speaker boehner are talking. they had a nice telephone conversation. that's terrific. the first time in a week but apparently that's the headline. that's the editorial body. not much came out of it that we know of. sources say no real breakthrough. no formal negotiations. sessions are not scheduled. no back channel discussions taking place that anybody knows about at this time and as we wait for the white house briefing to begin, let's bring in wolf blitzer on this topic. there are a couple of polls that are very telling about how americans feel about congress and the president are behaving when it comes to the fiscal cliff. let me read some of these numbers for you. should obama compromise to get things done. 72% say yes. 22% say no. should the gop compromise to get things done. and take a look. 72% say yes. my question for you, wolf, i'm not sure you'll have the answer but perhaps you'll have guidance. for those democrats who say the president has a mandate because voters voted him into office while he campaig

it in the fact that president obama's out there campaigning instead of sitting down with john boehner, running around pushing for a bill to increase -- extend just the middle class tax cuts which he knows republicans will never do. you can see it in the fact that 33 senate democrats signed this letter which says, quote, we will oppose including social security cuts for current or future pen fisheries in any -- beneficiaries at any time. that's signed by harry reid. senator durbin giving a speech saying no touching medicare or medicaid in any year end package. so, basically, the democratic position is no changes to social security, no changes to medicare, no changes to medicaid, yet the mainstream media all you hear is three words: grover, grover, grover. all you hear is about republican intransigence on taxes. where are the stories about democratic intransigence on entitlements? it seems to me that what they want to do is go off the fiscal cliff, pocket the increase on the wealthy, the tax increase on the wealthy, and blame republicans for the middle class tax increases. and if that's what the

that a democrat has won for re-election in the last 100 years. with the so-called fiscal cliff looming mr. obama sends chief negotiator treasury secretary tim gheiter for individual meetings with each member of the conditioningal leadership which includes speaker john boehner, perhaps the most important player here. the meetings mark the beginning of the real negotiations. that doesn't mean the posturing stage is behind us. one capitol hill veteran, former fdic, sheila bair, a long-time staffer by the way who butted heads with geithner in the past, made this interesting observation to david gregory about tim geithner saying he's not the right guy for the white house to be sending in for these talks. >> do you think tim geithner, secretary geithner is the right person to lead the negotiations for the administration sf. >> i don't know. i don't think this is tim's strong suit. i think tim was given the job of treasury secretary because he understood the banking system. he's not a budget guy. he's not a tax guy. he's never really worked in this sphere. >> geithner is leading these talks for two rea

that president obama had a lengthy phone call with house gop leader, the speaker, john boehner. dan lothian is at the white house. dan, what do you know? >> reporter: well, this is the second phone conversation now that the president has had with speaker boehner with regards to the fiscal cliff. this call, according to a source familiar with it, told me it lasted for 28 minutes. this official saying it was hardly short or curt, as had been reported by some news outlets. and my colleague, jessica yellen, heard from another source that said that the president told speaker boehner that he felt that rates had to go up on wealthy americans and that there would be no deal without that. so clearly, there is still some distance between the two sides here. the president believing that wealthy americans need to pay more. those bush era tax cuts should not extend for them. republicans believing that all americans should benefit from those tax cuts, and that now you should put en titlements on the table. of as we see, the officials from the white house going up to capitol hill today, treasury secretary

are at a virtual impasse when it comes to entitlement benefits and tax hikes. and while president obama is sending timothy geithner over to capitol hill today the president himself was supposed to meet with john boehner this week but now it seems he has no plans of doing that. but politico is reporting this morning that the top officials who have been working on this deal behind the scenes for months now said they are starting to get together an outline of an agreement. if all of that does go through here's what we can expect. for one taxes will go up by about $1.2 trillion. president obama has called for a $1.6 trillion tax hike over the next decade. this is right about in the middle of what democrats want and what republicans say they're willing to give. people making more than $250,000 a year should see limited deductions and loopholes and they'll most likely see a rise in their rates as well. as for entitlement benefits and this mainly goes for medicare, those will be cut by at least $400 billion and potentially a lot m
